On Thursday, federal prosecutors charged the company’s co-founder Yih-Shyan “Wally” Liaw with participating in a scheme to illegally move servers containing Nvidia graphics processing units valued at approximately $2.5 billion into China. The indictment alleges that Liaw, along with Supermicro’s Taiwan-based general manager Ruei-Tsang “Steven” Chang and an intermediary named Ting-Wei “Willy” Sun, used a Southeast Asian corporation as a conduit to deliver servers equipped with prohibited Nvidia H200 and B200 GPUs to Chinese clients. Liaw and Sun were taken into custody recently, while Chang is currently evading authorities, as stated by the Justice Department. Supermicro itself has not been charged, nor have fellow co-founders Charles Liang—the CEO and chairman—and his wife Sara Liu, who also co-founded the company and sits on the board.
